Energy Efficiency
Energy Efficiency is using less energy to provide the same level of energy service. An example would be insulating a home to use less heating and cooling energy to achieve the same temperature. Another example would be installing fluorescent lights and/or skylights instead of incandescent lights to attain the same level of illumination. Efficient energy use is achieved primarily by means of a more efficient technology or process rather than by changes in individual behavior.
Energy efficient buildings, industrial processes and transportation could reduce the world's energy needs in 2050 by one third, and be crucial in controlling global emissions of greenhouse gasses, according to the International Energy Agency.
Sustainability
Sustainability has been expressed as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
To be sustainable, nature’s resources must only be used at a rate at which they can be replenished naturally. There is now clear scientific evidence that humanity is living in an unsustainable way, by consuming the Earth’s limited natural resources more rapidly than they are being replaced by nature. Consequently, a collective human effort to keep human use of natural resources within the sustainable development aspect of the Earth’s finite resource limits is now an issue of utmost importance to the present and future of humanity.
